 What Happened

In 1859 US Major Carleton was tasked to investigate the 1857 massacre at Mountain Meadows. He found the remains of 120 westbound pioneers scattered about the killing fields north of St. George. Some of the remains were sent to Washington DC for forensic analysis. The remains are now being returned to Mountain Meadows for burial on Sept 9, 2017

On the 150th anniversary of Mn Meadows, Richard Turley, managing director of the LDS Church History Department wrote an article for the Ensign Magazine. To read the essay in the Sept 2007 issue, click here.

The Utah War (1857–1858), also known as the Utah Expedition,[1] Utah Campaign,[2]Buchanan's Blunder,[3] the Mormon War,[4] or the Mormon Rebellion[5] was an armed confrontation between Mormon settlers in the Utah Territory and the armed forces of the United States government. The confrontation lasted from May 1857 to July 1858. There were some casualties, mostly non-Mormon civilians. The MtnMeadows event occurred during this chaotic period.
